Dr. Kristen Fernandes

Kristen working with an Illumina MiSeq instrument

Kristen undertook her PhD in the Trace and Environmental DNA (TrEnD) Lab at Curtin University (Australia). Her previous research focused on using metabarcoding and insects to document how environments respond to change.

She started in the Gemmell Lab as a Postdoctoral Fellow in 2022. Her postdoctoral research is part of the Smart Idea project funded by MBIE and works in collaboration with institutions and researchers across New Zealand and the USA to implement novel eDNA pest monitoring methods to accurately measure the distributions and densities of introduced mammals (rats, possums, and stoats) at local and landscape scales.
