Jonika is from Whitianga, and came to Dunedin to complete her BBiomedSci majoring in Reproduction, Development and Genetics in 2019. She joined the Gemmell lab briefly in 2018 as a summer student, supervised by Dr. Helen Taylor and looking and sperm morpholgy from distinct populations of South Island Robins (Petroica australis). She is now undertaking her Honours year, developing genetic diagnostic tools for single-species identification in the context of environmental DNA sampling. She is using Chinook Salmon as a target species, which will be of use for monitoring purposes such as investigating their spatial distributions. This research will have important implications for invasive species detection, endangered species monitoring and application to biomedical diagnostics.
