Anya grew up in New Zealand and has a BSc Majoring in Genetics at the University of Otago (2020). She has stayed in Dunedin to complete a Masters in Zoology under the supervision of Eddy Dowle, Neil Gemmell and Christoph Matthaei. The Masters research focuses on developing a DNA based biomonitoring technique of freshwater streams using CRISPR-Cas enrichment. This would allow for abundance estimates of each species present in a stream sample. This includes developing some reference mitochondrial genomes of common New Zealand freshwater macro-invertebrates with hopes to improve the prospects of using eDNA as a widely used river health monitoring technique.
